Is your switchboard holding your home back?

The switchboard is the heart of your electrical system. Older fuse boards were never designed for heat pumps, induction cooktops, EV chargers and the rest of a modern home, and they can become a fire risk as they age.

We replace old fuse boards and tired switchboards with modern boards fitted with circuit breakers and RCD protection. Where the wiring behind the board needs work, we rewire too, so the whole system is safe and ready for insurance checks.

Jamie looks at your board, talks you through what needs doing and why, and gives you a fixed, upfront quote before any work starts.

Switchboard upgrades FAQs

Straight answers to the questions we hear most. Anything else, Jamie is happy to talk it through.

What is a switchboard upgrade?

It means replacing an old fuse board with a modern switchboard. Fuses are swapped for circuit breakers, RCD protection is added, every circuit is labelled, and there is room for new circuits as your home changes.

Common signs are ceramic fuses, power that trips often, scorch marks or a burning smell near the board, and no RCD protection. If your home still has its original board from decades ago, it is worth getting it checked.

We strongly recommend it. An RCD (residual current device) cuts the power in a fraction of a second if current leaks to earth, for example through a faulty appliance or a person. New Zealand's wiring rules require RCD protection on new power and lighting circuits in homes, and many older switchboards have none. Adding RCDs is one of the most worthwhile safety upgrades you can make.

It depends on the size of the board, how many circuits it has, how many RCDs it needs and the condition of the wiring behind it. We look at your board first and give you a fixed, upfront price, so you know the cost before work starts.

Some insurers ask about old fuse boards and wiring, especially in older homes. An upgrade comes with a Certificate of Compliance, which gives you and your insurer peace of mind.

Most homes are done in a day, with the power off for part of it. We will tell you exactly what to expect when we quote.

Yes. Every job is finished to the AS/NZS 3000 wiring rules and signed off with the right Electrical Safety Certificate (ESC) or Certificate of Compliance (CoC), so your insurance and any future sale are covered.
